ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Why I Made Practical Sobriety
My name is Coby Grace. I spent years trying to solve my own problems with alcohol. Practical Sobriety grew out of what I learnt along the way.
This is not a story about finding one miraculous answer. It is about trying, failing, learning, and gradually arranging the pieces into something that finally worked.
MY STORY
When continuing was no longer an option
As I approached forty, the long-running problems I had with alcohol were becoming impossible to ignore.
I had known since my late twenties that something was wrong. By my thirties, intentions to cut down, drink less often or confine drinking to weekends repeatedly failed to materialise. Instead, I drank more, more often, and the problem became progressively worse.
My attempts to stop became more determined and sometimes produced meaningful periods of sobriety. Life would improve. I would feel better, think more clearly and begin to recognise myself again.
Then, because things were better, I would persuade myself that I could return to drinking and somehow keep the improvements. I could not.
That became the cycle: recovery, improvement, misplaced confidence, relapse, and another attempt. I went through it enough times to become painfully familiar with where the process broke down.
THE TURNING POINT
I needed a clearer explanation
Eventually, I stopped treating sobriety as a test of character and started treating it as a problem that could be understood.
I read, watched and listened to as much as I could. I experimented with different ideas, paid attention to what helped, and examined why earlier attempts had failed.
Where possible, I treated the problem methodically. I looked at the conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the body; at motivation, reward and depleted self-control; and at the practical realities of moving through different stages of recovery.
No single idea solved everything. The breakthrough came from arranging several useful ideas into the right order.
FROM EXPERIENCE TO METHOD
Clarity. Strategy. Sobriety.
What emerged was a simple three-stage structure.
01
Clarity
Understanding what is happening, how you arrived there and why determination alone may not be enough.
02
Strategy
Using that understanding to prepare properly, reduce avoidable pressure and give recovery the best possible conditions.
03
Sobriety
Putting the strategy into practice while recognising that early, middle and long-term recovery have different needs.
This became the structure of the book and, later, the structure of this website. The purpose is not to prescribe one route for everyone, but to offer a clear framework that people can understand, adapt and use.
WHY SHARE IT?
This book is about the way back
I know how difficult the cycle can feel because I spent years inside it.
I also know that it can end. Eventually, sobriety stopped feeling like a temporary interruption and became my normal life. Even when difficult circumstances arrived, returning to alcohol was no longer the answer that presented itself.
Practical Sobriety is my attempt to turn that long process of experimentation into a shorter and clearer route for someone else. It brings together the explanations, strategies and practical measures that helped me finally achieve escape velocity.
